As Israelis get set to celebrate the Passover holiday, the Ministry of Environmental Protection is calling upon them to keep the environment in mind. That's because, according to the ministry's data and reports from local authorities and waste treatment sites, Israelis generate between 15% - 50% more waste during Passover, compared to other days of the year.

Amir Peretz officially took over the reins of the Environmental Protection Ministry from outgoing Minister Gilad Erdan, during an exchange-of-ministers ceremony today, March 19, 2013. Erdan, who has served as environmental protection minister for four years, said that during his tenure "we have significantly reduced the environmental differences between [Israel] and the West."

Ministry director general, attorney Alona Sheafer Karo, says she is concerned about the new trend of complaining about environmental regulation. "Without regulation there is no competition and no innovation," Sheafer Karo said at the Herzliya Conference today. "Factories that pollute Israel's air and soil will not be able to export their products to OECD countries, due to advanced global [environmental] regulations."
